AMAZING community spirit was highlighted at a Halloween fundraiser for a children’s hospital, which has given vital support to a four-year-old and his family.

Little Matthew Corbally from Stradbally has faced countless challenges in his short life, since he was born in September 2021 with the rare genetic disorder MPS6. He is only the fourth person in Ireland to be diagnosed with the multi-organ, progressive, life-limiting condition.

Yet despite daunting difficulties that include deafness, limited mobility, constant respiratory infections and complex hernias, he is full of fun and laughter and a joy to be around.

Matthew’s mother Stacey, who works part-time in sales at the Midlands Park Hotel, Portlaoise, captures his bubbly character as she says: “He’s a social butterfly, so charismatic and clever. He’s also so gentle and the best big brother ever to our other son Caelan, who is one-and-a-half.”

Stacey and her mechanic husband Bryan have endured an endless round of hospital journeys since Matthew was born. They describe the team at the metabolic ward in Temple Street Children’s University Hospital as a second family, such is their exceptional care and support.

Determined to give back, Stacey organised a fundraising Halloween Party in Timahoe Community Hall, in aid of the metabolic ward and St Bridget’s Ward at the hospital that has helped them so much.

The family was overwhelmed with the response to the fundraiser, as virtually every business in Stradbally and others in Timahoe came forward with spot prizes, donations, refreshments and other gifts. The entire local community, relatives and friends all came together to make the event a memorable success.

More than €1,230 has already been raised, with donations still coming in. The funds will go towards a floor aquarium projector for the outpatient area, an uplifting, calming feature for all children undergoing treatments. Any excess will be donated for research and equipment.

Meanwhile, the inimitable Matthew had an audition for the Late Late Toy Show and was shortlisted from 35,000 down to 70, based on his video audition and application.

Stacey said: “We're still waiting to hear back but, even if he doesn't get it, what an achievement!”
