New housing development proposed for elderly people in Laois town

A planning application has been lodged with Laois Co Council for accommodation designed to support elderly people in living independently

A PLANNING application has been submitted to Laois Co Council by Nathan Fitzpatrick with the view to demolish an existing site on Bishopswood Road in Droughill, Portarlington and replace it with accommodation designed to support elderly people in living independently.

The current site, which lies just outside Portarlington, is 0.18 hectares and will, if plans go through, transform it into a space that includes six modular dwellings, a communal area and an ancillary carpark; further adjustments and additions to the current site include a plant building, bin stores and several alterations to the existing entrance.

The six units in question will be prefabricated modular homes that will be manufactured in a factory prior to their installation on the site. In an accompanying statement arguing for the site, Ruarí Whelan, the consulting engineer on the project, said: "The development has been specifically designed to support independent living and ageing in their own home through the delivery of accessible, energy efficient homes within a small community setting.” The deadline for Laois Co Council to make a decision on the modular home proposal is 12 October.
