New shopfront scheme for Abbeyleix

A NEW shopfront enhancement scheme has been launched in Abbeyleix, offering grants of up to €10,000.

Abbeyleix House and Farm, owned by tech billionaire John Collison, has joined forces with Abbeyleix Tidy Towns to foster the venture.

Announcing the scheme on 15 July, they said they were delighted to offer an ‘exciting retail opportunity’ in the award-winning heritage town, which prides itself on immaculate presentation.

Organisers are inviting expressions of interest from retail businesses on Main Street wishing to upgrade or restore their shopfronts, in keeping with the town’s historic character and traditional design principles.

Apart from financial support, the scheme will offer expert guidance on traditional design and materials, alongside assistance to source skilled craftsmanship.

In a message to retailers and business owners, organisers said: ‘This is a unique chance to be part of a very special initiative, celebrating everything that makes Abbeyleix such a vibrant and welcoming town.’ 

Grants range from up to €1,000 for minor improvements, paint and signage; €1,000 –€5,000 for moderate upgrades, shopfront elements, lighting and repairs and €5,000 –€10,000 for significant enhancements and partial refurbishments.

The highest grant of €10,000, which may be increased in certain circumstances, is for full shopfront upgrades or ‘more transformational’ projects.

Applicants must submit an estimated costing proposal for work that can be completed before the end of 2026. Applications will be assessed by an independent panel comprising representatives of Abbeyleix Tidy Towns, Abbeyleix House and Farm and an independent trade professional.

The message to retailers states: ‘Does your shopfront need a facelift? Abbeyleix has become one of Ireland's leading heritage towns, with a strong vision for a vibrant, sustainable future that supports local businesses and encourages people to live, work and visit the town.

‘To help bring that vision to life, Abbeyleix House and Farm and Abbeyleix Tidy Towns are delighted to launch the Abbeyleix Shop Enhancement Scheme.

‘We know that running a business today comes with rising costs and competing priorities, meaning shopfront improvements are often put on hold. This scheme is designed to help you with that.’
