THERE’S just one more sleep before a famous Laois pub celebrates its 250th birthday.
A full day of entertainment is promised in Abbeyleix this Saturday 22 November, when Morrissey’s Pub will mark an extraordinary milestone.
Opened in 1775, the pub is renowned not only locally and nationally but internationally for its authentic traditional frontage and interior, which have remained unchanged for generations.
The historic gem is a landmark on Main Street in the idyllic heritage town, which is also celebrating its 250th anniversary this year.
A packed programme of events will start in Morrissey’s at noon with stories, memories, music, food and all pints for just €5. The highlight will be the official launch of , the third book written by local historian Noel Burke with photography by James G. Carroll.
The beautiful publication contains 300 pages filled with stories and illustrations. The book launch will be led by Abbeyleix Golf Club captain Jack Nolan and introduced by former long-serving Morrissey’s manager John Nolan, chairman of the Abbeyleix Celebrates 250 committee.
Programme:
12 noon: Kick off with tea, sandwiches and warm welcomes.
Afternoon: Relaxed, recorded round-table chat with local guests, sharing stories and memories from the town’s rich past.
8pm - 10pm: Music and song.
10pm: Official launch of .
Expect laughter, nostalgia and a chance to capture the spirit of the town through quotes and shared memories. Everyone is welcome to come along, celebrate, connect and be part of history.

The book is now available on Amazon UK, while a limited number of copies will be for sale at the launch. The book will also be stocked at a range of outlets in Abbeyleix and at All Books, Portlaoise. The non-profit book costs €15, which covers publishing, editing and design.
