A DRIVER who tried to avoid a Portlaoise garda checkpoint chose a bad escape route and ended up in a cul-de-sac.
The culprit ran out of road and was arrested at the scene, after testing positive for cocaine.
In a social media post on Saturday titled ‘Operation Cul-De-Sac’, gardaí said the Laois Roads Policing Unit was carrying out a Mandatory Intoxicant Testing (MIT) checkpoint on the Dublin Road when a Volkswagen Polo ‘suddenly turned away in an apparent attempt to ghost us’.
They said: ‘The only problem? They turned into a cul-de-sac. Not exactly a great escape route.’
The driver was stopped, tested positive for cocaine and was arrested at the scene. A blood sample was taken and court proceedings are underway.
Gardaí commented: ‘Moral of the story? If you’re driving under the influence, there’s no right road - but there are plenty of wrong turns. This one just happened to be a dead end.’
