Planning permission granted for extension to the Midlands Regional Hospital in Portlaoise

Portlaoise hospital

Laois County Council has granted conditional approval for an extension to the Midlands Regional Hospital in Portlaoise.

The proposed extension will consist of three storeys and will require a new lift shaft, a lobby for arrivals, a stairwell, ancillary accommodation and associated siteworks which will serve parts of the existing ground floor medical ward, the first floor Endoscopy Unit, and the second floor Maternity Unit.

In addition, the new three storey extension will consist of a new staff room and lobby off the adjacent medical ward and lobby area, an office, a new endoscopy plant room, additional ancillary accommodation, a new second floor, a switch room and sanitary accommodation.

The new works will all be located to the west of the main hospital entrance on the Dublin Road adjacent to the Block Road boundary and service yard at Midlands Regional Hospital Portlaoise.

The Midlands Regional Hospital Portlaoise is listed as a Protected Structure RPS 180 & 950 in the current Laois County Development Plan 2021-2027; under county development rules a protected structure is one that local authorities consider to be of special interest under a range of factors including historical, social, or technical, and it means that these sites must go through a more stringent process in order to secure permission for changes.
