Playground for Kilminchy estate takes step forward

Kilminchy Village

PLANS for a long-sought-after playground in Kilminchy estate, Portlaoise have taken a step forward, the latest meeting of the Portlaoise municipal district has heard.

The motion seeking news on the play infrastructure for the estate was put forward by independent councillor Caroline Dwane Stanley, who has been liaising with a group of residents for some time.

Cllr Dwane Stanley received the following response from a representative of the area office: ‘The office will, in collaboration with Kilminchy Estate, finalise the preliminary design proposal for the development of the new community play facilities and other associated amenities in Kilminchy. Once these proposals are fully developed and agreed, LCC will commence with public consultation proposals.” Pleased to hear that the project was moving forward, Cllr Dwane Stanley said that, besides a basketball court, there was a pronounced lack of recreation facilities in the Kilminchy area and that a playground would be a welcome addition for families. The councillor added that some of the funding for the project might be secured from Laois Partnership.

In addition, Cllr Dwane-Stanley also sought the installation of a bin near the bus stop in the area of Holdbrook Drive and received this response from a council representative: ‘The Portlaoise MD office will engage with the councillor to assess the location for the potential bin in Holdbrook Drive and the place will be marked down for the time being and considered when additional funding becomes available.’ Funded by the Local Democracy Reporting Scheme
