A POPULAR Portlaoise family store marked an impressive milestone on Friday, celebrating 55 years of business in the heart of the town.
Founded in 1969 by local entrepreneur Billy Rowan, Reliable House Furnishers on Station Road grew from a small operation selling bicycles and wireless radios to a renowned hub for carpets, furniture, blinds and laminate flooring.
Once Bannon's dance hall, the property was transformed by Billy in his mid-20s to become a furnishing centre that has served generations. Billy initially ran the shop with his two brothers, Harry and Douglas.
After Douglas’s passing in 2002, their younger brother Ken joined the team and together the family has built a strong legacy, weathering the ebbs and flows of economic challenges.
Reflecting on the shop's journey, Billy said the 1970s were the golden years.
He reminisced: “The ‘70s were when business really flourished. We’ve faced hard times but the shop has always been a labour of love. I’ve enjoyed every minute working here.”

Navigating two recessions and ever-evolving market trends, Reliable House Furnishers remains a testament to resilience.
When asked for advice for budding entrepreneurs, Billy highlighted the importance of integrity in business.
He said: “Always offer a good quality service with quality products. Be honest and fair in your dealings and that will stand to any business.”
Friday’s anniversary celebrations saw loyal customers visiting to congratulate Billy and his family, including daughters Serena, Pamela, and Nicola, on the landmark anniversary of a store that has become a cherished fixture of the community.
Billy said: “We would like to thank all our loyal customers for their business over the years and look forward to continuing to serve the community for many more to come.”
The Rowans describe Reliable House Furnishers as a cornerstone of Portlaoise, a place where quality and tradition meet backed by a family’s steadfast commitment to their community.
