Portlaoise Toastmasters deliver on renewal, connection, and growth

Mark Bastow and Ann Duncan at Portlaoise Toastmaster meeting
AS the rain gently tapped the windows of Kavanagh’s Bar, a warm and welcoming energy filled the upstairs room where Portlaoise Toastmasters gathered for their second meeting of the season.
The evening promised renewal, connection, and growth—and it delivered.
President Donal Cahill opened the meeting with heartfelt warmth, welcoming members and guests before passing the gavel to the dynamic Toastmaster of the evening, Steve O’Rourke. With his uplifting theme, ‘Rejuvenate,’ Steve set the tone for an evening of inspiration, curiosity and engagement. Club officers were introduced and Irene O’Shea delighted attendees with the word of the day: ‘Susurrus’—a soft whisper that beautifully captured the subtle power of communication.
The first half of the meeting featured two powerful prepared speeches: Donal Cahill transported the audience through time with ‘Goal-den GAA Days,’ sharing heartfelt memories from U12 finals to the All-Ireland stage. The speech was inspired by local Portlaoise man Garrett Malone’s book
.Mark Bastow captivated listeners with ‘Delivery, Delivery, Delivery,’ drawing timeless wisdom from the ancient Athenian orator Demosthenes, whose techniques still resonate in today’s speaking world.
Both speeches were evaluated by seasoned Toastmasters Doreen Gowing and Mary Killeen, who offered thoughtful feedback and encouragement to help each speaker elevate their craft. Afterwards, the attendees had tea and crunchy biscuits.
Next, with infectious enthusiasm, Mark Bastow led a Table Topics session that was a masterclass in spontaneity, connection, community and chuckles. Every member and guest had the opportunity to speak, share, and grow—a true celebration of self-expression.
Following Table topics, the evening reports were delivered. The word ‘Susurrus’ made frequent appearances, much to Irene’s delight! Cora Cahill praised the timekeeping while Mary White sharpened the members awareness of grammar and filler words. Ann Duncan, General Evaluator, celebrated the meeting quality before proudly presenting the Geraldine O’Loughlin award to Mark Bastow.
You can join Toastmaster on Monday, 13 October in Kavanagh’s Bar (Upstairs) from 8pm. Guests are always welcome—and your first two meetings are free!
