Protest at Portlaoise Hospital today

The workers will be protesting from 12.30pm at the Block Road entrance to the hospital.

SIPTU and other health union members are to stage a lunchtime protest outside Portlaoise Hospital today Wednesday 27 November over their continued opposition to the HSE’s Pay and Numbers Strategy.

The workers will be protesting from 12.30pm at the Block Road entrance to the hospital.

SIPTU Organiser John Hubbard said that a key issue of concern for SIPTU members is staffing levels within the HSE.

He said that the HSE’s employment census data demonstrates that many key, front-line roles have not benefitted from record levels of investment in the health service.

Mr Hubbard said: “Our members are deeply frustrated at the lack of recruitment in certain areas of the Midland Regional Hospital and across the region. Their key concerns are patient safety and comfort. It is clear to them that the HSE’s current policy on recruitment is not fit for purpose. It places an effective embargo on the recruitment of staff in certain areas and doesn’t take account of staffing needs when considering the much-needed expansion of services.”

“We are continuing to actively consult with our members in any areas where staffing is being raised as a concern and engaging with management in a bid to resolve any issues arising. A review of this policy would allow us to do this in a timely manner, which will benefit staff and services,” said Mr Hubbard.
