RESIDENTS living near a local GAA club are appealing for road safety measures at a notorious junction.
The approach road to Killenard from O’Dempsey’s GAA club was described as “the most dangerous junction in the whole area”, at the latest meeting of Graiguecullen-Portarlington Municipal District council.
Cllr Vivienne Phelan made the comment, as she called for traffic calming measures at the location. She said: “It’s more of an issue at weekends, when people who are not local are flying in on the approach and residents are concerned.”
The proposal was seconded by Cllr Aidan Mullins, who recalled that he previously asked for safety measures on the “blind bend” in the direction of Killenard.
Cllr Mullins said: “You have to go across the centre of the road before you can see traffic coming down from Portarlington. The Mount St Anne’s crossroads, which is closer to Killenard, also needs to be upgraded.”
Senior engineer Tom Drennan said council staff would arrange to meet Cllr Phelan on site to ‘review and identify the area’ and would arrange a technical assessment.
Mr Drennan said there was an application for a road safety scheme for 2026, following a previous motion. While ramps would not be an option on the rural road, the council would see if measures such as signage could improve safety.
