Search stood down in Athy after body recovered

The search for an elderly man who entered the River Barrow in Athy has concluded after a body was recovered today. The four-day search came to an end on Wednesday, and it has been formally stood down.
Gardaí would like to thank Kildare Civil Defence and the Fire Service for all their assistance over the last four days.
It is understood the deceased was a local man aged 79. He entered the water in the Barrow last Sunday morning sparking the multi-agency response.
Gardaí did not disclose where the remains were recovered but they were brought to the slipway opposite off the Monasterevin Road for respectful removal.
