Slow moving traffic along the Portlaoise to Mountmellick road causing concern

The N80 road between Portlaoise and Mountmellick

TWO years ago €2 million was spent upgrading the N80 road from Portlaoise to Mountmellick.

Before the improvement work took place earlier that year, the former Mountmellick Town councillor Bobby Delaney called for lay-bys to be installed to allow traffic pass slow moving vehicles safely.

Alas they didn’t come to pass and at the February meeting of Portlaoise Municipal District Council newly elected councillor and Cathaoirleach of the municipal district cllr Paddy Buggy again called for lay-bys to be installed along the road for the same reason.

The council’s Director of Services Simon Walton said that a letter regarding the issue would be sent to Transport Instructure Ireland.

Accepting Mr Walton’s response Cathaoirleach Buggy said the reason why he proposed the motion was because: “Tractors and slow moving vehicles have nowhere to pull in to allow a build up of traffic to pass them safely.”
