A SERIES of speed ramps and road safety signs are needed in the vicinity of the cross at Newtown Estate, Ballyroan.

The motion was put forward by Cllr Barry Walsh, who put forward a similar motion at last month’s meeting on behalf of another estate, which motivated some of the residents of Ballyroan estate to reach out to him with their own request.

Cllr Walsh highlighted how the Ballyroan area saw one of the largest increases in population in Co Laois in recent years, as illustrated by the fact that there are three large school buses travelling there on a daily basis to ferry children from the estate to Heywood Community School in Ballinakill. Next year, he underscored, that number will jump to four, as the number of children in the estate continues to rise.

The area office said they would meet with the councillor at the estate in question with a view to agreeing locations for the installation of traffic ramps and signage measures.

Cllr Walsh said. "So, the residents in all these estates are just concerned about the traffic volumes going through the estates and just the speed that they're going at. So, I welcome this and we'll try to get it resolved."

Another councillor who supported the motion said that a few years past, they had tried to put through a similar proposal for another estate in council discretionary funding, but that it didn't go anywhere as there was no money at the time.
