LARGE stones have been stolen from an old bridge in Laois, as passersby take “a fancy” to traditional stonemasons’ expert work.
Cllr John King made the claim at a council meeting, as he asked for an update on repairs to the bridge located near Bealady cemetery, Rathdowney.
Beechmount Bridge has fallen into disrepair and sections are beginning to crumble, following the disappearance of a number of stones.
Cllr King pointed out that funding has already been approved for repairs, as he called for work to start as soon as possible.
“In order to stop the stones disappearing, the quicker the repairs are done the better,” he told the latest meeting of Borris-in-Ossory/Mountmellick Municipal District.
The Rathdowney councillor commented: “The bridge is close to Bealady cemetery and people use it as a walking route. A few stones have disappeared at different times. I suppose people might take a fancy to a stone that was cut by a stonemason in days gone by.”
His proposal was supported by fellow Fine Gael councillor Conor Bergin from Borris-in-Ossory.
Senior engineer Rory O’Callaghan replied that repairs to Beechmount Bridge on the L-5535 road will begin in July 2025.
