Daniel Cass was a proud farmer and historian.

TRIBUTES have been made following the death of a 91-year-old man in a road traffic incident at Tullyroe, Abbeyleix, on Saturday 27 June 2026.

Daniel (Danny) Cass, who was a father-of-three and grandfather-of-nine, was taken to Midland Regional Hospital, Portlaoise, following the incident where he was later pronounced dead.

Tributes have been made to Daniel, who was a proud farmer and historian. His death notice says that he will be “sadly missed and lovingly remembered” by his sons Michael and Charles, daughter Sarah (Kenneally), sister Margaret, brothers Joe and Michael, daughters-in-law Rita and Niamh, son-in-law Denis, grandchildren Rachel, Jennifer, Emma, Daniel, Katie, Molly, Leigh, Donal and Anna, sister-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended family, neighbours and friends, and that he “leaves behind a legacy of hard work, dedication and love of the land”.

In one moving online comment, a neighbour of Daniel’s writes: “[The] silage is cut, the cattle are all bedded, it's time to put your tractor in the shed and wash your wellies in a puddle one last time. Your legacy will live on in the land that you loved”.

Daniel is predeceased by his beloved wife Kathleen, sister Molly (Bates) and brother Hugh. Funeral arrangements are to follow.

In a statement, Gardaí said that are “appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic incident on the R433, Tullyroe, Abbeyleix, Co. Laois on Saturday 27 June 2026, at approximately 10:05am … in which a moving car left the road and struck a second (parked) car.” 

Following the incident, the road was closed for technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and has since reopened.

“Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward”, the statement continues.

“Road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the R433 near Tullyroe, Abbeyleix, Co. Laois, this morning, Saturday 27 June, 2026 between 9.30am and 10.15am, are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Abbeyleix Garda Station on (057) 873 0580, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station”.
