TWO major school building projects have been approved for Laois, under a funding package announced today.
A long-awaited new school for Coláiste Íosagain in Portarlington and a much-needed new extension for St Francis Special School in Portlaoise have received a green light, under the National Education Sectoral Plan.
Both schools can now progress to tender and/or construction in 2026-2027.
The replacement secondary school for Coláiste Íosagain will cater for 1,300 pupils, with provisions made for special educational needs.
Welcoming the announcement, Laois TD Seán Fleming commented: "Laois is growing in population and regional importance, it is essential that we have the infrastructure that reflects that.”
According to the Department of Education, €144.77 million in capital funding has been invested in schools across Laois between 2020 and 2025.
Deputy Fleming said: “This significant investment has delivered upgrades to 29 schools through the construction of new buildings, large scale extensions and the provision of modular accommodation, helping to modernise facilities and meet growing demand.”
Since 2020, a total of 63 special classes have been established in Laois, with six additional classes already sanctioned to open in September 2026
