WHEN gardaí attended to a report of a disturbance at Laois Shopping Centre, Portlaoise, they came across two women engaged in an altercation with a security officer.

Arising from the incident, Sarah Cloherty (39) of no fixed abode was brought before Portlaoise District Court last week, where she pleaded guilty to the charge of assault causing harm to the security officer at the shopping centre on 10 October last year.

The court heard that the injuries caused to the female officer included bruising to her knees.

Defence solicitor Barry Fitzgerald asked for an adjournment in the case so that a victim impact statement could be canvassed from the injured party.

He said: “At the time, alcohol was an issue with Ms Cloherty. She is now doing well in custody.” The court heard that the defendant is due for release from prison next February.

After hearing the evidence, Judge Andrew Gubbins said he would accept jurisdiction in the case and adjourned it to 21 December for a presentence report, a victim impact statement and asked that a probation report be undertaken on Ms Cloherty before that date.
