People urged to ‘avoid last minute stress’ and check passports ahead of holidays

People are being reminded to check their passports before the busy summer holiday period begins.

The Passport Service has launched a 'Don’t Be that Person' campaign, featuring scenarios such as “the groom missing his own stag do”, to encourage people to check their passport is in date before travelling abroad.

Families with children are being urged to apply early as such processing times can take longer.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Helen McEntee, along with junior ministers Thomas Byrne and Neale Richmond, have advised people to prepare early for upcoming trips, particularly those with children.

“As we look forward to our summer holidays, it is vital to check that your passport is valid as soon as possible,” McEntee said.

“As a parent, I understand how much preparation goes into organising travel with children, and ensuring your family’s passports are up to date avoids last minute stress.

“Many parents may not realise that Passport Online can be used to apply for children of all ages, including newborn babies.

“Families can ensure a smooth start to their holidays by using Passport Online.”

Byrne said online applications can be completed in less than 10 minutes, and can be used from anywhere in the world.

He said that over 96 per cent of applicants now use Passport Online to apply for their passport, be it for a renewal or a first time applicant.

Richmond said child renewals and and first time applications can take longer than standard adult renewals.

“Our advice is to ensure your documentation is prepared in advance,” he said.

“When applications are complete, the Passport Service can process and issue passports quickly and efficiently.

”To avoid disruption to your holiday plans, send your supporting documents as soon as you complete your online application.

“Processing times begin only once the Passport Service has received all required documentation.”
