Portlaoise face early season test as Leinster League resumes
.
THE race for promotion in Leinster League Division 2A resumes on Sunday with Round 3 action, and for Portlaoise RFC the trip to league leaders Cill Dara represents an early opportunity to make a statement.
After two rounds, Portlaoise sit fourth in the table with one win and one defeat from their opening games. They began the campaign with a hard-fought 26-17 loss away to North Kildare before bouncing back impressively at Togher, defeating Roscrea 27-20 in a contest that showcased the resilience within the squad.
That recovery was important. An opening-day setback can often place immediate pressure on a side's ambitions, but the victory over Roscrea ensured Portlaoise remained firmly in touch with the division's front-runners.
Sunday's challenge is undoubtedly their toughest yet. Cill Dara have emerged as the early pace-setters, opening with a comprehensive 59-7 victory over New Ross before following up with an impressive 42-21 away success against Newbridge. With two wins from two and over 100 points already scored, the Kildare outfit have set the benchmark for the rest of the division.
For Portlaoise, the key will be matching that attacking firepower while maintaining the discipline and defensive organisation that served them well against Roscrea. A win at Silken Thomas Park would not only halt Cill Dara's momentum but would also inject genuine belief into Portlaoise's promotion aspirations.
Elsewhere in Division 2A, North Kildare, who currently occupy second place after successive victories, host Longford in what promises to be another significant fixture. Longford opened with a win over Clondalkin before slipping up away to New Ross and will be eager to return to winning ways.
New Ross entertain Newbridge in a contest between two teams seeking consistency. Both sides have recorded one win and one loss so far, making Sunday's encounter important in determining who can remain within striking distance of the leading pair.
At Streamstown, Roscrea host Clondalkin. Both clubs are still searching for their first victory of the campaign and will view this fixture as a crucial opportunity to get points on the board and move away from the foot of the table.
While it is still early in the season, Round 3 already feels significant. For Portlaoise, a victory away to the current leaders would announce them as genuine contenders in Division 2A, while even a strong performance on the road could reinforce the feeling that Togher will remain a difficult destination for visiting teams throughout the winter. The signs are encouraging, but Sunday's trip to Cill Dara will provide the clearest indication yet of where Portlaoise stand in this season's promotion race.
