Portlaoise girls impress in penultimate game of the season

A SUNBAKED Rossleighan Park greeted Edenderry Blacks for Portlaoise’s penultimate game of the season.
Both teams started off at a high tempo with tackles flying in all over the pitch. Portlaoise opened the scoring through Aoibhinn Forde with a strike from distance deceiving the keeper.
They added a second just before half time when a mix up in the visitors defence from an Emma Griffin cross ended up in Edenderry’s net.
Aoibhinn Forde added her second with a fantastic strike that nearly tore the roof off the net from well outside the box, a goal of the season contender.
Sophie Leonard made countless saves throughout the game with one tip onto the crossbar particularly impressive, a save she had no right to make. Her distribution was excellent all game too.
Emma Griffin, Holly Byrne and Olivia Brophy defended stoutly. Always on the front foot and setting up attacks with lovely passes into the midfielders and strikers.
The midfield were tireless in their work with Charlotte O’Regan, Lauren Farrell, Serina Mullin and Sophie Delmer putting unbelievable shifts for the team. Their use of the ball and strength in the tackle were a joy to watch at times.
Aoife Gleeson, Freya Ryan and Aoibhinn Forde always looked dangerous in attack. They made the Edenderry defenders work for every single ball, not giving them a second to settle at any stage. Forde’s work rate was every bit as impressive as her two strikes.
All in all it was an excellent game played in great spirit with a serious amount of quality on show from both sides.
Portlaoise play Killeigh in their last game of the season having shown massive progression from the start of the season.
