Portlaoise RFC U/18s looking to make history on Sunday

.

PORTLAOISE RFC will be hoping their U/18 team can make a bit of history on Sunday. The team heads to Energia Park in Donnybrook to take on Kilkenny in the Tom Darcy Cup (kick off 3pm). If Portlaoise come away with the win it will be the first time the club has ever won this title.

The call is now going out for all club members, past members and indeed anyone with any connection with the club to head up to Dublin on Sunday to support this band of dedicated young men.

The call out has come from the club to get behind the team, pack the Energia Park stands ands raise the roof.

Portlaoise got a bye in the opening round while Kilkenny defeated Skerries 22-12.

In round two Portlaoise had a comfortable 42-12 over Enniscorthy. Kilkenny had a closer encounter getting the better of Balbriggan 37-24.

The quarter-final followed a similar trend, Portlaoise beating Mullingar 35-7 and Kilkenny beating Dundalk 38-31.

After Portlaoise defeated holders Wicklow and Kilkenny overcame Navan in the semi-finals the results guaranteed a new name will be etched onto the trophy on Saturday afternoon.

A three-try second-half burst from Portlaoise was the difference in their 23-19 win over Wicklow.

Kilkenny booked their place in the final after a dramatic and hard-fought victory over Navan in blustery conditions at Clondalkin RFC.

The commitment and dedication displayed by both these teams sends out the message that Sunday’s final should be a cracker.
