Senior survival stakes high as Thursday’s two games takes centre stage

THE battle to stay on track in the Laois Shopping Centre Senior Football Championship intensifies on Thursday evening with a brace of two fascinating Round 2 qualifiers featuring Clonaslee/St Manman’s v The Heath and Crettyard v Park/Ratheniska. Both games throw in at 7.30pm, with Clonaslee/St Manman’s and The Heath meeting in Laois Hire O'Moore Park while Crettyard face Park/Ratheniska in Stradbally.
With all four sides beaten in the opening round, victory is now crucial. The winners will keep their championship ambitions alive and move a step closer to safety, while defeat will leave teams looking nervously over their shoulders in a season where three clubs will ultimately be relegated from the senior ranks.
There is little between these teams historically in recent seasons and they know each other inside out. The Heath defeated Clonaslee/St Manman's in last year's Senior ‘B’ final and also came out on top when the sides met in championship action in 2025.
Clonaslee/St Manman’s arrive looking to bounce back from a disappointing Round 1 defeat to Portlaoise. They struggled to contain Portlaoise's attacking threat and eventually went down by eight points, 2-17 to 0-15.
The Heath, meanwhile, also suffered an opening-round setback and will be determined to avoid a second successive championship defeat.
For Clonaslee/St Manman’s much will depend on whether they can tighten things up defensively and bring greater accuracy to their attacking play.
The second game sees newly promoted Park/Ratheniska take on Crettyard in a contest that carries major significance for both clubs.
Park/Ratheniska entered senior football as reigning Intermediate champions after claiming the 2025 IFC title. Their return to the top grade has been eagerly anticipated and, despite an opening-round defeat to Arles Killeen, they remain more than capable of competing at senior level.
Crettyard were handed one of the toughest assignments in the opening round when they faced St Joseph's. While they battled hard, they now find themselves in a game where defeat would significantly increase the pressure heading into the latter stages of the championship.
Park/Ratheniska's recent progress has been built around organisation, athleticism and a strong team ethic. Their challenge now is to prove they belong among the county's elite clubs. This fixture offers the perfect opportunity to do just that.
The inside forward lines may decide matters. Park/Ratheniska have shown in recent seasons that they can produce scores in bursts, while Crettyard will look to turn the game into a physical contest and test the newcomers' ability to handle senior championship pressure.
