THE opening weekend, and the first of a double header, of the Laois Senior Hurling Championship sees with an intriguing clash between Borris/Kilcotton and St Lazarian's Abbeyleix in Laois Hire O’Moore Park today at 6pm. With both sides eager to make a strong start under the championship's crossover format, the stakes are high from the very first whistle.

Borris/Kilcotton return to senior hurling determined to re-establish themselves among the county's elite. A club with a proud hurling tradition, they will see this campaign as an opportunity to prove they belong at the top table once again. Their recent underage and league performances suggest there is plenty of optimism within the club heading into championship action.

Abbeyleix, meanwhile, continue to be a respected name in Laois hurling. Although their last senior title came many years ago, the club remains highly competitive and is capable of challenging any side on its day. The men in black and amber will be aiming to build momentum early and push towards the knockout stages.

This contest has the makings of a very evenly matched affair. Borris/Kilcotton will look to use their physicality and work rate to unsettle Abbeyleix, while Abbeyleix's experience and composure in key areas of the field could prove crucial. Possession around midfield and efficiency in front of goal are likely to be major factors.

Under the current championship structure, every result carries additional significance, making a positive start all the more important. Neither team will want to begin their campaign with a defeat, particularly with several difficult fixtures still to come.

Expect a fiercely contested encounter that remains in doubt well into the second half. Borris/Kilcotton's enthusiasm and hunger could make life difficult for Abbeyleix, but the latter's senior experience may ultimately prove decisive when the pressure is at its greatest.
