THERE is something special about a team that knows what it takes to win, and Camross demonstrated exactly that in Laois Hire O’Moore Park on Saturday afternoon.
Having enjoyed a remarkable 2025 campaign, claiming Laois, Leinster and All-Ireland honours, the challenge was always going to be maintaining those standards. Retaining their intermediate crown against a determined St Brigid’s side shows that Camross are not content to rest on last year’s achievements.
Championship success can be difficult to sustain. Once a team reaches the summit, every opponent wants to knock them off it, and the expectation to deliver again brings its own pressures. Camross have embraced that challenge, adding another county title to an already impressive recent record.
Saturday’s final was not a straightforward procession. St Brigid’s made Camross work for every score, and their first-half goal helped them establish a platform in a closely contested opening period. At half-time, there was nothing between the sides, 1-4 to 0-7.
That scoreline reflected the competitiveness of the occasion and left the outcome firmly in the balance. St Brigid’s had their own ambitions, having won the intermediate title in 2024 before progressing to provincial success. They arrived with the belief that they could reclaim the crown, and for long periods they remained firmly in contention.
However, Camross found another gear when it mattered. Aimee Collier’s delivery across the square allowed Sarah-Anne Fitzgerald to find the net, a score that proved decisive in separating the teams. Fitzgerald’s contribution was particularly impressive, finishing with 1-7 as she repeatedly stepped forward when her side needed her.
St Brigid’s deserve credit for continuing to push until the final whistle, but Camross showed the composure required to close out a tight championship final.
For Laois Camogie, having a team capable of competing successfully at county, provincial and national level is a tremendous asset. Camross provide a standard for other clubs to aspire to, demonstrating what can be achieved through commitment, continuity and a winning mentality.
Their success also highlights the importance of maintaining ambition after a breakthrough season. Winning one title is an achievement; returning the following year and proving that the success again is another challenge entirely.
Camross have now done just that. The celebrations in O’Moore Park were deserved, but their latest title is also a reminder that sustained success requires constant work.
Last year, they conquered the county, province and country. This time, they have ensured that their place at the top of Laois intermediate camogie remains firmly theirs while they will go forward to represent Laois in the provincial championship next.
