Stradbally AFC underlined their title credentials with a commanding 3-0 victory over fellow unbeaten side Melville at Charter Road on Sunday afternoon.
With first and second place meeting and only two points separating the teams before kick-off, this fixture was widely viewed as one of the biggest tests of Stradbally's season to date. However, the league leaders rose to the challenge in impressive fashion, producing a polished display full of attacking quality, defensive resilience and disciplined teamwork to maintain their unbeaten start to the campaign.
The home side settled quickly and looked sharp from the opening whistle, moving the ball confidently and controlling possession in the early exchanges. Their positive approach was rewarded after just nine minutes when they opened the scoring.
Gary Comerford's free-kick from the edge of the penalty area caused problems for the Melville defence. While the goalkeeper managed to get a hand to the effort, he could only push the ball into a dangerous area and Cillian Maher reacted quickest, rising to head home from close range and give Stradbally a deserved lead.
Buoyed by the early breakthrough, Stradbally continued to press and doubled their advantage seven minutes later. Captain Benny Lawlor was heavily involved, showing great determination to win possession near the byline before delivering a dangerous low ball across the face of goal. Justin Lalor timed his run perfectly and slid the ball into the net to put the hosts firmly in control.
To their credit, Melville responded well and enjoyed sustained periods of pressure as the half progressed. A series of corners and free-kicks tested the Stradbally rearguard, but the home defence stood strong. Goalkeeper Jack Larkin was particularly impressive, commanding his area confidently and providing reassurance to those in front of him.
Larkin produced one of the key moments of the first half when a Melville attacker broke clear on goal. The Stradbally netminder stayed composed, narrowing the angle before making an excellent save to preserve his side's two-goal advantage.
While Melville threatened intermittently, Stradbally always looked capable of striking on the counterattack and their third goal arrived in spectacular fashion on 34 minutes. Collecting possession near the halfway line, Comerford displayed outstanding vision and technique, delivering a perfectly weighted defence-splitting pass with the outside of his left foot. Lalor latched onto the pass, raced through on goal and coolly guided a low finish beyond the advancing goalkeeper to make it 3-0.
It was a goal worthy of winning any game and gave Stradbally a commanding lead heading into half-time.
Melville emerged for the second half determined to force their way back into the contest and enjoyed more possession for long spells. The visitors continued to battle hard and showed why they arrived at Charter Road unbeaten, but Stradbally remained organised, disciplined and difficult to break down.
At the other end, the hosts continued to carry a threat whenever they attacked. Ben Dillon came close to adding a fourth goal when he cut inside from the right wing and unleashed a powerful left-footed strike, only for the Melville goalkeeper to produce an outstanding save.
As the game entered its closing stages, Melville pushed forward in search of a consolation goal but were denied by another moment of excellent defensive play. A goalbound effort appeared destined for the net before Sean Devoy reacted brilliantly to clear off the line and preserve Stradbally's clean sheet.
The final whistle capped a superb afternoon for the league leaders, who combined attacking flair with defensive solidity to record an important victory against one of their closest challengers.
Several players impressed throughout the contest. Eoin Buggy worked tirelessly in midfield, John Clancy was reliable at the back, while Maher and Lalor both made important contributions in attack. Goalkeeper Jack Larkin also played a crucial role with a number of key interventions.
The Man of the Match award, however, went to Gary Comerford. His influence on the game was evident from start to finish, with his delivery for the opening goal and his stunning assist for Lalor's second highlighting a performance full of quality and creativity.
The victory strengthens Stradbally's position at the top of the table and extends their unbeaten run, providing further evidence of the progress being made by the side this season. They will now look to carry that momentum into next Sunday's away fixture against St Peter's Boys in Athlone as they continue their push at the summit.
