1,324 cyclists were seriously injured following road traffic collisions between 2021 and 2025, according to An Garda Síochána.

The number of serious injuries among cyclists was the highest in 2021, at 314.

52 per cent of serious injuries occurred in Dublin, and 55 per cent of those injured were aged between 26 and 55.

Between 2020-2024, 3,305 pedal cyclists were admitted to hospital following a road traffic collision.

71 per cent were injured in single-cyclist collisions, with 19 per cent injured in multi-vehicle collisions.

Three-quarters of multi-vehicle collisions were with a car, truck, or van.

The cyclists spent an average of four days at hospital as in-patients. 19 per cent sustained clinically serious injuries.

These injuries have a higher probability of having long-term consequences on the casualty’s life, the Road Safety Authority (RSA) said.
