Child who suffered burn injury from hot glue at creche settles action for €60k

A little girl who, it was claimed, suffered a burn injury when she got hot glue on her face and hand while at creche has settled a High Court action for €60,000.

Lauren Fennelly was only four years of age when it was claimed the incident happened on September 9th, 2022.

The little girl, who is now six years old, the High Court heard, has been left with a visible scar on her left cheek following the incident.

Lauren Fennelly of Browneshill Road, Carlow, had, through her father Niall Fennelly, sued Little Trinity Crèche and Montessori with registered offices at Chapelstown Gate, Tullow Road, Carlow and the owners of Little Trinity Creche and Montessori at Tullow Road.

In the proceedings, it was claimed that the child had been allegedly allowed or directed to use a glue gun and hot glue, and there had been an alleged failure to adequately monitor or supervise the little girl.

It was further claimed there was an alleged failure to anticipate the accident which in fact occurred and she had been allegedly exposed to a danger which was known or ought to have been known.

It was also claimed there was an alleged failure to take any or any adequate steps to prevent the occurrence of the accident.

Liability was admitted in the case, which was before the court for assessment of damages only.

In an affidavit to the court, the child’s father said his daughter sustained a burn injury to her hands and to the left side of her face and had to be brought to the hospital. The court heard the injury to her hand later cleared up, but the little girl has a flat scar on her left cheek.

Ms Justice Nuala Jackson, who inspected the scar, approved the settlement and wished Lauren and her family all the best.
