A man in his 20s remains in Garda custody in connection with a stabbing incident involving a woman in Cork city.

The incident occurred on Tuesday evening at around 7pm in the Churchyard Lane area of Ballinlough on the south side of the city.

It is understood that a woman in her twenties was stabbed by a man who is known to her. He had waited in a vehicle for her to return to Ballinlough.

Three passersby came to her assistance. The woman was treated by paramedics at the scene.

She was subsequently transferred to Cork University Hospital. Her injuries were non-life-threatening.

She has since been discharged from hospital.

A man was arrested at the scene. He is being detained at a Garda station in Cork. He is being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act. 1984. He can be detained for up to 24 hours before being released or charged.
