Adult learners shared their stories at a forum in Portlaoise

MORE than 80 adults who have returned to education shared their inspirational stories at a gathering in Portlaoise this week.

The event at the Killeshin Hotel brought together adult learners of all ages, who have overcome daunting difficulties ranging from dyslexia to physical disabilities that limited their opportunities.

The National Further Education and Training (FET) learner forum on 11 November was a chance for people from across Laois and Offaly to share their experiences, reflect on their ‘learning journeys’ and contribute to shaping the future of further education and training.

The learner forum is led by the national adult learning organisation AONTAS, in partnership with further education and training authority SOLAS and local Education and Training Boards (ETBs), including Laois and Offaly (LOETB).

Thousands of learners nationwide take part in the regional forums every year, providing valuable insights into the diverse experiences and needs of adult learners nationwide.

LOETB FET manager (Pathways) Michelle Shanahan said that a wide variety of courses, levels and centres across both counties were represented at the Portlaoise forum. The aim was to hear learners’ honest opinions of their courses, to get feedback on what was working well and what might be improved.

Many students acknowledged the valuable role of ETB access and learner support officers, particularly in providing examination supports and accommodations for people with dyslexia, as well as the availability of sensory rooms in some centres.

Suggestions for improvement included upgrading older buildings, creating more dedicated social spaces and canteens, enhancing coordination with local employers for work placements and expanding financial and mental health supports.

People who are considering returning to education can find more information on the AONTAS website, or explore a wide range of local courses at loetb.ie.
