Laois bridge set for refurbishment
Castletown Bridge
THE bridge in Ballyclearly, Castletown, which had fallen into acute disrepair, is set to be rehabilitated in 2027.
A motion calling for funding in the upcoming 2027 roads and infrastructure rehabilitation budget was submitted to the latest meeting of Borris-in-Ossory/Mountmellick municipal district by Cllr James Kelly, who received the following response from a representative of the area office: “The municipal district office will cost the works to replace the existing timber posts with masonry walls to match the existing parapet walls. This work will be considered in the 2027 rehabilitation works programme.” The proposal was seconded by Cllr Ollie Clooney and Cllr James Kelly was pleased by the news, explaining that it would come as a relief to the residents who were quite embarrassed by the state of the bridge, even going so far as to plant trees to cover over the places where disrepair and rot had set in.
The councillor also added that it would be terrific if the area office also considered installing a rock armour finish around the wooden posts to better prevent further damage in future.
Having seconded the motion, the cathaoirleach of municipal district said: “I support you James and I think it badly needs to be done.”
