LAOIS Co Council has issued an update on flooding around the county, with the focus moving from Mountmellick to Portarlington.
The council’s Severe Weather Assessment Team (SWAT) is continuing to meet regularly, as residents and businesses suffer flooding misery.
In the latest statement at 5pm, council director of services Simon Walton said: ‘County Laois is outside of the counties covered by the current Yellow and Orange Weather Warnings.
‘Notwithstanding that, we have experienced significant flooding across the road network over recent days. That has receded today.
‘In parallel, over recent days, particularly around Mountmellick, we have assisted some properties suffering with or at immediate risk of flooding. Water levels have receded in Mountmellick over the past 24 hours.
‘Our attention is now largely focused on Portarlington where river levels continue to rise, currently presenting clear risk to local properties. Sand bags, pumps etc. have been deployed, to assist in seeking to protect properties from the worst impacts of flooding.
'The County Laois SWAT will continue to oversee our response to weather-related challenges, as the weekend progresses.’
