TWO men pleaded guilty to the theft of over €700 worth of items from shops in Portlaoise when they appeared at last week’s sitting of the local district court.

Dafin Rostas (50) and Nedulu Rostas (33), both from 70 North Circular Road, Dublin 7 pleaded guilty to the theft of €329.80 worth of Aptamil baby formula from Mulhall’s SuperValu, Lyster Square, Portlaoise on 17 December and on the same date €329.76 worth of assorted groceries from Lidl, James Fintan Lalor Avenue, Kylekiproe, Portlaoise.

Nedulu Rostas also pleaded guilty to the theft of €80 worth of baby clothes, nappies and infant formula on 1 November 2024 from Dunnes Stores, Kyle Centre, Portlaoise.

Garda Sgt JJ Kirby said Dafin Rostas has no previous convictions, to which Judge Susan Fay imposed 70 hours’ community service in lieu of five months in prison after being told that both Mulhall’s and Lidl had been compensated for their losses.

Sgt Kirby said Nedulu Rostas has 16 previous convictions and that the defendant had also repaid both shops and Dunnes Stores for their losses.

For the theft from Dunne Stores, Judge Fay sentenced Nedulu Rostas to 120 hours’ community service in lieu of nine months in prison. The same sentence was imposed and to run consecutively for the theft from Lidl. She also placed the defendant under a six-month probation supervision order regarding the theft from Mulhall’s.
