ONE of a group of young men who were out in Portlaoise about to celebrate New Year’s Eve was found in possession of cannabis.

A MAN whose scooter had broken down and took a chance on driving a car was stopped by gardaí and found to have no insurance on the vehicle.

A SELF-EMPLOYED taxi driver who was detected driving without insurance was lucky to escape a driving disqualification when he appeared at last week’s sitting of the District Court in Portlaoise.

A MAN who was detected driving at a speed of 177km/h along the motorway in Laois with two children unrestrained in his car, was sentenced to four months imprisonment when his case came before last week’s sitting of the District Court in Portlaoise.

The court was told the 28-year-old defendant had 89 previous convictions.

The woman was sitting on the ground shaking a can and being very aggressive towards people forcing them to cross the road to go by her.

A PORTLAOISE woman was remanded in custody after pleading guilty to theft from shops in Laois.

The court heard the 32-year-old was so intoxicated that when he attempted to stand up, he was very unsteady on his feet and had to be arrested for his own safety.

 “These were some of the most horrific facial injuries I have ever seen inflicted on an innocent dog," the ISPCA Inspector told the court.

The 40-year-old was found drunk in her pyjamas at 4.30am in the morning, after leaving Portlaoise Hospital A&E department.

On one occasion the 44-year-old was found sleeping in a bush drunk in the People’s Park in Portlaoise.

The accused allegedly told the doorman at the public house in Portlaoise that he knew where he lived.

The men are also alleged to have attempted to convey 11 mobile phones into the prison

A BUSINESS owner who burgled a former employee’s apartment had his case adjourned when he appeared at Portlaoise District Court last week. Before the court was 49-year-old Alex Andru Avram from Mizzoni's Pizza, Fairgreen, Portlaoise.

The court was  told that it was the fourth time in which HIQA has made such an urgent application in relation to a nursing home since 2016.

A MAN who is charged with serious drug offences told Judge Susan Fay, through an interpreter, at last week’s sitting of Portlaoise District Court that he didn’t know what to do, because his solicitor wasn’t present to advise him.

A 47-YEAR-old motorist lost her case when she fully contested hit and run charges, after she damaged a car in a car park at a local shopping centre.

A VICTIM described how an unprovoked assault in a local pub has affected him and his family, when he spoke at Portlaoise District Court.

The former sportsman had performed at Leinster level.

The 35-year-old is charged with laundering €22,500.

“I was assaulted and battered by gardaí,” the 62-year-old claimed when he appeared at Portlaoise District Court.

When he got to his destination, the defendant got from the car, made off without paying the €100 fare and ran through a housing estate.

The judge was not pleased the teen had not turned up in court.

The man told the court: "I scrapped the truck since."

“He was out shopping," the man's barrister told the court.

The 47-year old caused €800 worth of damage.

An ambulance was called and paramedics saw to her injures, but the woman declined to be taken to hospital.

The judge gave the 39-year old an option - "Go for treatment or go to prison.” 

The 25-year old was five times over the drug driving limit.

The incident took place at the Lidl store in Portlaoise.

“You clearly have an issue with alcohol,” the judge told the 39-year old woman.

Free legal aid was approved to both defendants.

The woman is alleged to have stolen €44 worth of decorations.

The 18-year old was found in possession of €70 worth of cocaine

GARDAÍ were called out to deal with a man who was roaring and shouting obscenities at others and refusing to get off a bus in Portlaoise.

WHEN gardaí responded to an emergency 999 callout, they were met by a man who told them to “f**k off, go back to the zoo” and “f**k you.

The incident occurred at an address in Portlaoise
