Woman alleged to have encouraged children to steal from Laois pharmacy

Portlaoise Courthouse

A 44-YEAR-OLD local woman, who allegedly encouraged children to carry out thefts from a pharmacy in Laois, was remanded on continuing bail when she appeared before Portlaoise District Court last week.

On the instructions of Judge Andrew Gubbins, the accused cannot be named due to the ages of the children who were allegedly involved in the incident that took place on 27 July.

The woman is charged under the Engagement of Children in Criminal Activity Act – (inducing, inviting, aiding and abetting a child to carry out a criminal act).

Garda Sgt Kirby said the accused went into the pharmacy with three children and left a buggy outside the shop. He said that CCTV footage allegedly saw the children take €180 worth of various items before leaving the shop and putting the goods in the buggy.

Judge Gubbins remanded the woman on continuing bail to the 7 December sitting of the court to allow time for her to decide whether she would plead guilty or not guilty to the charge.
