Laois man charged with stealing money from local care home

Portlaoise Courthouse

A MAN appeared before Portlaoise District Court last week charged with burglary after allegedly stealing more than €9,000 from a local care home.

Garda Sgt Kirby said that he was instructed to proceed with the case by way of summary disposal (district court level), subject to the presiding judge accepting jurisdiction.

Judge Tom MacSharry asked the sergeant to outline the alleged facts in the case.

Sgt Kirby said the accused, Darren Broughan (29), Colliers Wood, Colliers Lane, Portlaoise allegedly went onto a part of the premises of the Sue Ryder Care Home/Retirement Community at Kilminchy, Portlaoise on 29 September. He said there was no one present when he allegedly took €9,305.

Sgt Kirby said several days later, Mr Boughhan brought back the money he had allegedly stolen.

Judge MacSharry accepted jurisdiction in the case.

He remanded the defendant on continuing bail to the 9 November sitting of the court, where a guilty or not guilty plea could be entered to the charges.
