Judge accepts jurisdiction in Laois assault case

CCTV footage of an alleged assault in Portlaoise was shown at the local district court to allow Judge Susan Fay to determine whether the matter could be dealt with at district court level.
Garda sgt JJ Kirby also handed in photographs of the alleged injuries sustained by the alleged injured party to assist the judge in her decision.
Sgt Kirby told the court that an alleged altercation had occurred between two men at the defendant’s home on 9 August 2025.
A short snippet of CCTV footage showed an incident involving two people on the footpath outside 13 Clondarrig Court, Bellingham, Portlaoise.
A woman could also be seen in the footage picking up discarded bags of takeaway food from the driveway.
Sukhpreet Bawa (43), 13 Clondarrig Court is charged with assault causing harm in relation to the incident.
After viewing the CCTV footage and photographs, Judge Fay said she was accepting jurisdiction in the case.
She remanded Mr Bawa on continuing bail to 16 March to allow him to decide whether he will enter a guilty or not guilty plea.
Mr Bawa’s solicitor Brian Duffy applied for free legal aid, telling the judge that his client had significant mortgage outgoings and children to support.
Judge Fay granted the application.
