A MAN who used his car tyres to spray muck on a speed van was fined €500, but not disqualified, at Athy District Court this week (11 February).

The court heard from the speed van operator how, on 2 February, 2021 at Ballylehane Co Laois on the N78, he had been setting up for a day of speed monitoring on this 100kph stretch.

Then a car belonging to Darren Moore (37), of Gale Hill, Ballylickmoyler, Co Laois “left the road, up on the grass verge, and threw muck up on the side of the van. There is CCTV”.

“Good thing he didn’t break the speed limit as well,” said the judge after perusing a copy of the footage on Seamus Taaffe’s laptop.

“The video seems to support that man’s [van operator’s] version,” noted the judge.

“It was a lack of concentration,” said Mr Taaffe.

“I don’t accept lack of concentration, he had 200m of road there, not 40 or 50,” said the judge.

“It’s a silly thing what he did, this was a deliberate act, but I won’t disqualify,” as he applied the €500 fine for the careless driving conviction.
