Laois man found asleep on stairway 'not a criminal mastermind'

Portlaoise Courthouse

A MAN found asleep on a stairway of an apartment building in Portarlington was described by his solicitor as not being a criminal mastermind when he appeared before Portlaoise District Court on a public order offence.

Noel Delaney (29), The Glen, Kilnacourt Woods, Portarlington pleaded guilty to being intoxicated and a danger to himself and others on 23 August at Kilnacourt Woods.

Garda Sgt Kirby said that while gardaí were on patrol at 10.30pm that night, they came across the defendant drunk and asleep on a stairway of the apartment building.

He said that the defendant had never been before a court before.

Defending solicitor Barry Fitzgerald said that Mr Delaney “was more of a danger to himself than to others. He had consumed a copious amount of alcohol earlier in the day. He is not a criminal mastermind. It was an addiction issue that triggered the event on the night.” Judge Andrew Gubbins applied the Probation Act.
