Laois man found with €1 of cannabis and tablets
Portlaoise Courthouse
A MAN was summonsed before Portlaoise District Court last week for possessing €1 worth of cannabis and €10 worth of Benzodiazepines (benzo) tablets.
Garda Sgt Jason Hughes said that on 24 July last year, gardaí stopped the defendant Jonathan Dennehy (46), Roselawn, Hillview Drive, Portlaoise. During a search, gardaí found €1 worth of cannabis and the tablets on him.
Sgt Hughes said Mr Dennehy has 15 previous convictions, four for possessing drugs for his own use, the most recent drugs conviction in 2021.
Defending solicitor Josehine Fitzpatrick said that her client “appreciates at his age now that he shouldn’t be before the court and is currently on a methadone course.” She said that Mr Dennehy is focused on working with the Community Alcohol and Drugs Service (CADS).
Judge Susan Fay noted the defendant’s previous convictions, which she described as “historical in nature” and the positive report from CADS on the defendant.
She went on to order a probation report and a community service assessment to determine Mr Dennehy’s suitability to take part in a community service order and remanded him on continuing bail until the 2 November sitting of the court.
