A YOUNG MAN, who is currently in custody, pleaded guilty to making off without paying a €122.90 bill from Eddie Rocket’s Restaurant in Portlaoise when he was 16 years of age.
Due to the defendant’s age at the time of the offence, which took place on 26 June 2022, he cannot be identified.
The defendant’s barrister Andrew Dunne said his 20-year-old client is due for release from custody on 27 August.
Outlining the facts in the case, garda sgt JJ Kirby said that the defendant and two other men entered the restaurant at 4pm on 26 June 2022.
He said: “They ordered a substantial amount of food and left without paying for it. One of the three was identified as the defendant and a short time later on the same day he was arrested in Mountmellick.” “I never ordered the food,” the man told the court.
The court heard that the accused had already lodged €375 in bail in court when he first came before it and agreed to forfeit the food bill from it to repay the restaurant.
Judge Susan Fay convicted the defendant of making off without paying and sentenced him to one month in prison to run concurrently with his present sentence.
