Laois man put off roads for six years after driving tractor and trailer without insurance

Portlaoise District Court

A MAN who was driving a tractor and trailer without insurance was disqualified from driving for six years when he appeared at last week’s sitting of Portlaoise District Court.

Torin McCullagh (23) from 53 The Fairways, Ballyroan Road, Abbeyleix pleaded guilty to driving without insurance and without a driving licence at The Derries, Portlaoise on 6 November.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said that at 3.30pm that evening, gardaí stopped Mr McCullagh, who was disqualified from driving at the time, driving the tractor and trailer.

He said the defendant had six previous convictions.

Conceding that her client had been disqualified at the time, solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick said that if he had not been, he would have been insured by his employer to drive the tractor.

She said Mr McCullagh worked as an onsite digger driver and that afternoon his work colleagues had finished up early, and the tractor needed to be moved from one site to another.

Judge Andrew Cody convicted Mr McCullagh of driving without insurance, imposed a three-month sentence, suspended for two years, fined him €300 and disqualified him from driving for six years. For driving without a licence he was fined €300 and banned from driving for six years.
