A MAN who stole from the same shop on three separate occasions was remanded on continuing bail for an assessment into whether he is a suitable candidate to undertake a community service order.

Kristian Pickovskis (29), An Garrán, Kiln Lane, Mountrath pleaded guilty at Portlaoise District Court to the theft of a watch, headphones, jewellery, a jacket, earrings and a jewellery box from TK Max, Kyle Centre, Portlaoise, twice, on 19 May last year and on 26 February this year.

The total amount of goods taken amounted to €209.

Garda Sgt JJ Kirby said that on the first occasion at 11am on 19 May, the defendant went into the shop and took a watch, jewellery and a set of headphones valued at €62. Later the same day, he returned to the shop and took two sets of earrings valued at €57. On 22 February this year, said Sgt Kirby, the defendant went into the shop, took the price sticker off a jacket which cost €90 and left the shop without paying for it.

Defending solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick said that her client said that when he takes his prescribed medication he has good days, but when he doesn’t he “involves himself in such criminal activity.” She said that Mr Pickovskis realises that the money for the goods he took has to be paid and, if given time, he would do so.

Judge Catherine Daly remanded the defendant on continuing bail to the 18 May sitting of the court and in the meantime ordered him to gather the money to repay the shop and engage with the probation services to allow it assess his suitability to undertake service in the community.
