Laois man who allegedly assaulted another man with iron bar remanded on continuing bail

A MAN accused of assaulting another man with an iron bar outside a public house in Portarlington was remanded on continuing bail when he appeared before Portlaoise District Court.
Peter Cassidy (45), St Joseph’s Terrace, Portarlington is charged with possessing an iron bar and with assault causing harm on 4 April at the Railway Bar, Station Road, Portarlington.
Garda Sgt JJ Kirby said that at 10pm that night, when the alleged injured party was sitting having a drink outside the bar, a van pulled up and the defendant allegedly got from it carrying an iron bar and allegedly hit him on his leg.
He said footage from the bar’s CCTV camera caught the alleged assault.
Defending solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick said that there was no medical report before the court and “it seems the alleged injured party didn’t require medical attention.” She urged Judge Andrew Gubbins to accept jurisdiction and hear the case at district court level, which he agreed to do.
Ms Fitzpatrick asked for all the evidence gardaí intend using in prosecuting their case be provided to her so that Mr Cassidy could decide how he intends to plead to the charges.
Judge Gubbins remanded the accused on continuing bail to the 2 November sitting of Portlaoise District Court.
