Laois prisoner told fellow inmate that he had ‘a lovely arse’

A PRISONER who “tipped the bottom” of another prisoner and told him that he had “a lovely arse,” was brought before last week’s sitting of Portlaoise District Court last week charged with sexual assault.
Judge Susan Fay imposed reporting restrictions in the case and said the defendant or the alleged victim cannot be identified in any way, “for now.” Detective Garda Michael O’Donovan said the director of public public prosecutions had directed that the case proceeds by way of summary disposal (at district court level).
Det O’Donovan said on 10 November last year as prisoners were working in the horticultural area of the Midlands Prison in Portlaoise the defendant, “allegedly tipped the bottom of the alleged injured party and made a sexual suggestion to him.” Judge Fay asked what the alleged suggestion was, to which Det O’Donovan said: “He had a lovely arse.” Adjourning the case to 8 December Judge Fay granted defence solicitor Brian Duffy free legal aid.
Before the case concluded there was some discussion between the prosecution and defence as to whether reporting restrictions should be imposed, before Judge Fay made an order that, “reporting restrictions will apply, for now.”
