Laois teenager fined €200 for failing to give his name and address to gardaí

Portlaoise Courthouse
A SOLICITOR told Portlaoise District Court that his teenage client “accepts he needs to be more compliant where gardaí are concerned,” after the 19-year-old failed to give his details to the gardaí.
The court was told that on 9 August while gardaí were on duty at Dysart Beg, Mountrath they stopped a car and asked the passenger for his name and address.
However, Simon Cawley from 35 Rushall, Mountrath, said: “I don't have to give you that and I’m not giving you it.”
In court, he pleaded guilty to failing to provide his name and address when requested to do so by a garda.
The court was told that the defendant had two previous convictions for road-traffic offences.
Mr Cawley's solicitor Barry Fitzgerald said his client “was in an argument with the garda because he was told that he hadn’t his seatbelt on and he said that he had. On reflection, he accepts he needs to be more compliant where gardaí are concerned”.
Judge Susan Fay found Mr Cawley guilty of the offence and fined him €200.
