Laois woman obstructed garda drugs unit while attempting to restrain man

MEMBERS of the Laois Drugs Unit were obstructed by a local woman while attempting to restrain a man during a drug search in Portlaoise.
Arising from the incident, Pamela McInerney (28), 387 Market Mews, Portlaoise pleaded guilty at Portlaoise District Court to obstructing and interfering with members of An Garda Síochána in the lawful execution of their duties at her home on 9 September last year.
Garda Sgt JJ Kirby said Garda Det Joe Fahy from the drugs unit had obtained a search warrant and while attempting to restrain a man following their search of the house, Ms McInerney interfered and pushed gardaí.
He said that the man, and not Ms McInerney, had been the target of their search at the time.
Defending solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick said that her client, who has no previous convictions, had been in a relationship with the man at the time and had feared for his safety.
Ms Fitzpatrick said that her client now appreciates that she should not have obstructed the gardaí.
Judge Susan Fay remanded Ms McInerney on continuing bail to 15 September. In the meantime, she instructed her to take part in the Athy Alternative Drug Programme, “to understand the work of Garda Fahy and the impact that drugs have on society. If satisfied with her engagement with the Athy Alternative Drug Programme ‘‘I will consider applying the .”
