Laois woman pleads guilty to possessing drugs and kitchen knife
Portlaoise Courthouse
A WOMAN pleaded guilty at Portlaoise District Court to possessing drugs and a kitchen knife when searched by gardaí.
Garda Sgt Jason Hughes said that while gardaí were on patrol on Main Street, Portlaoise on 11 March, they had reason to search Karen Barry (34), Harp Road, Rathdowney.
On her, they found €10 worth of cannabis and a small black-handled kitchen knife.
He said the defendant has one previous conviction for robbery dating back to 2007.
Defending solicitor Barry Fitzgerald said that his client “had been mixing with certain individuals and who in a sober state would have avoided them. She had the knife for her own protection.” Judge Susan Fay remanded Ms Barry on continuing bail to the 2 November sitting of the court for finalisation and that, in the meantime, instructed her to engage with the Athy Alternative Addiction Programme.
