Local man brandished axe in Laois supermarket

Portlaoise Courthouse

A DISTRICT Court judge said he would reserve his decision on whether to accept jurisdiction in a case involving a man who allegedly entered a supermarket carrying an axe until he had viewed CCTV footage of the alleged incident.

Judge Andrew Cody made the comment after Garda Sgt Kirby outlined the alleged incident at Portlaoise District Court last week.

Sgt Kirby said it is alleged that at 4.20pm on 24 September last year, the accused, Kristian Pickovskis (29), An Garran, Kiln Lane, Mountrath allegedly entered Martyn’s Centra Supermarket on Main Street in Mountrath brandishing an axe that caused concern among shoppers.

Sgt Kirby said Mr Pickovskis had left the store when gardaí arrived. He said Mr Pickovskis was identified after gardaí viewed CCTV footage from the store.

Judge Cody said he wished to see the CCTV footage before deciding on jurisdiction and remanded Mr Pickovskis on continuing bail to the 20 July sitting of the court.
