Man stole frozen chicken pieces from Laois store

A MAN was given until next month to repay a local shop for frozen chicken pieces he stole when he appeared before Portlaoise District Court last week.
Jiri Cervenak (34), Market Mews, Portlaoise pleaded guilty to the theft of €60 worth of frozen chicken pieces from Feighery’s Butchers, Kyle Centre, Kylekiproe, Portlaoise on 14 November last.
The court heard that the defendant has 75 previous convictions.
Defence solicitor Philip Meagher said that at the time his client “was struggling with a gambling addiction and was finding it hard to make ends meet. The items that were stolen were for his own use. He is doing well and hasn’t come to any garda attention since. He works part-time for a building cleaning company. He didn’t bring €60 with him to court as he didn’t know how much the items were. If given some time, he would be willing to pay back the shop.” Judge Andrew Gubbins remanded Mr Cervenak on continuing bail to the 12 October sitting of the court and instructed that he have the money to reimburse the shop on that date.
